Morgan Freeman was born on June 1, 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee. Freeman started acting in local dramas, winning a statewide drama competition at the age of 12. He worked on several theater productions, such as The Royal Hunt of the Sun, before winning an Obie Award for his role in the play Coriolanus in 1980. He would earn his second Obie Award for The Gospel at Colonus (1984) and his third in 1989 for the film Driving Miss Daisy.

Freeman later starred in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Seven and Deep Impact. He was nominated for Academy Awards for his roles in Street Smar, Driving Miss Daisy and The Shawshank Redemption before winning for his work on Million Dollar Baby. He worked on Bruce Almighty and its sequel Evan Almighty before joining the Batman Begins movie and its sequels. Freeman’s distinctive voice has narrated several documentaries, most notably March of the Penguins. Freeman also played Nelson Mandela in Invictus (2009). Among his accolades are a couple Golden Globe Awards and several awards from the NAACP.
