Laverne Cox was born May 29th, 1972 in Mobile, Alabama. She is the first transgender woman of color to have a leading role in a mainstream scripted television show, and is best known for her portrayal of Sophia Burset on the Netflix original series, Orange Is The New Black. Her role in the series has earned her two Screen Actor’s Guild Awards.
Laverne Cox has also appeared in Grandma, Carl[a], Musical Chairs, Doubt, Freak Show, The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do The Timewarp Again, and Uncle Stephanie. She has made guest appearances on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Bored To Death, and The Mindy Project.
