Blue Öyster Cult is the legendary progressive heavy metal band with a career spanning six decades. They are highly respected masters who are considered one of the main innovators of metal music. The group originated around Eric Bloom (lead vocalist) and Buck Dharma (lead guitar), and led the band through numerous line-up and name changes. After several album releases, their big break was the single “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” (1976), #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and a top-40 hit around the world.
Blue Öyster Cult continued releasing albums and single throughout the end of the 20th century, selling 24 million records worldwide. Bands which cite them as an influence include Iron Maiden, Metallica, Alice in Chains, Twisted Sister, Ratt, Opeth, Queens of the Stone Age, and many more. While they remained more of an album-and-tour-oriented band unconcerned by charts, they stand forever as the rock band other rock bands look up to.
