Rapper, activist, and actor Wyclef Jean, who performs under his real name, was born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, on October 17, 1969. He later moved to New Jersey with his family, and gained famed in the early 1990s with his work as a member of the group Fugees, who released their debut album Blunted on Reality. Together, they released a handful of albums and catapulted to fame with the cover “Killing Me Softly”. Wyclef Jean released his debut album The Carnival in 1997, and later The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book in 2000. The latter album featured appearances by Earth, Wind & Fire, Kenny Rogers, and Mary J. Blige. Wyclef Jean later wrote the song “Million Voices”, which was featured in the film Hotel Rwanda, and in 2006, and was featured on a Shakira song entitled “Hips Don’t Lie”, which received tremendous airtime.

After releasing a variety of albums, singles, and collaborating with other artists, Wyclef Jean formally announced he would be running for the office of President of Haiti in 2010. His bid, however, was rejected seeing as he had not lived in Haiti for the required five years. He has received three Grammy Awards in his career, such as Best Rap Album for The Score with Fugees as well as for Supernatural as Album of the Year.
