Spike Lee was born on March 20, 1957 in Atlanta, Georgia. His parents were a teacher and a jazz musician. He attended Morehouse College where he graduated with a B.A. degree in mass communication. He later went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. While attending Morehouse, he made his first student film Last Hustle in Brooklyn. After that, he went on to be an actor, director, and producer.

His first extremely popular film was She’s Gotta Have It, which turned out to be one of the most successful films of 1986. He won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his 1989 film Do the Right Thing. He also gained a lot of praise for his work on 2006’s Inside Man, which featured several A-list actors such as Denzel Washington and Jodie Foster. His films are known for including “touchy” topics, such as politics and race.
