Smash Mouth started out as a novelty band, but found itself in the ideal position to become the premiere alternative rock band of the 1990s, right when everybody was ready to explore beyond grunge. The core line-up of Steve Harwell (lead vocals), Greg Camp (guitar), Paul De Lisle (bass) and Kevin Coleman (drums) burst onto the scene with “Walkin’ on the Sun” (1997), hitting top-10 in the US, Australia, and Canada. They never looked back.
Smash Mouth has been through a couple line-up changes since then, but has not seen their edge blunted. Their single “All Star” (1999) hit platinum and charted top-10 again, and was as good as an anthem for the turn of the millennium. By the 2000s, Smash Mouth’s popularity has quelled, but they still keep up a reputation as the ultimate party band. They spend their time these days touring and playing festivals.
