Sleep is a trio originally formed in 1990. The group disbanded in 1998. The trio released Dopesmoker in 2003. The album was a re-release of their 1999 album Jerusalem. The album was included in the 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Tie of the Rolling Stone.

Al Cisneros, Chris Hakius, and Matt Pike reunited in 2009. Hakius opted for retirement, and Jason Roeder took his place in the trio in 2010.

In 2018, the group dropped a new studio album The Sciences. The release contains six tracks including the title track, Marijuanaut’s Theme, Antarticans Thawed, Giza Butler, and The Botanist. The album made it to No. 2 of the Hard Rock albums chart and No. 12 of the Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart. In the same year, they dropped the single “Leagues Beneath.”
