Hip hop recording artist and spoken word poet Sage Francis was born Paul Francis on November 18, 1976 in Miami, Florida. He is a founder and CEO of the independent hip hop record label Strange Famous Records, which began as a way for him to release his own recordings but has since expanded to include a roster of like-minded artists. Francis won the Scribble Jam emcee battle in 2000. In 2001, his song “Makeshift Patriot” became an Internet hit for its critique of American media during and immediately following the September 11th attacks. He released his solo album Personal Journals in 2002. After singing to Epitaph Records, he released three subsequent albums: A Healthy Distrust (2005), Human the Death Dance (2007) and Li(f)e (2010.)

Francis is also part of the contemporary spoken word movement. His relationship with the Providence poetry slam community led to it being called “The House that Sage Francis Built.” From 2000 to 2002, he was the DJ for the NYC-Urbana poetry slam, a weekly slam series held at legendary punk rock venue CBGB. Francis has performed shows with Atmosphere, Brother Ali, and Eyedea & Abilities. He released his latest album, Copper Gone, on June 3, 2014 and toured with Strange Famous Records label mate B. Dolan.
