Born in Woking, Surrey, River Matthews started learning music at the age of seven. During that time, he also learned how to play classical guitar. Initially, he didn’t have any musical taste, but his mom found a music teacher who taught him play the guitar which sparked his passion for music. He grew up listening to ‘60s and ‘70s pop music because his parents normally play these songs at home or while traveling.
His musical influences were The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Cat Stevens, and Rolling Stones. And during his teenage years, he started listening to Radiohead, Oasis, and Ocean Colour Scene. His first recorded song is entitled “Catherine.” Then he produced the debut EP “Feels Like Morning.”
