Michael Franks was born on September 18, 1944 in La Jolla, California. His only forma music education comprised six guitar lessons he got with the purchase of his first guitar. He began writing songs in college, and later got work composing music for films like Cockfighter (1974) and Zandy’s Bride (1974). He released an eponymous album in 1973, followed by his second album, The Art of Tea, in 1976. Sleeping Gypsy, this third album, released in 1977. He has released 18 albums and many EPs, but his biggest hit came in 1983 with When Sly Calls (Don’t Touch That Phone), which took off on the radio. His song Speak to Me was the main theme for the Russian TV show Muzoboz. Franks plays guitar and cabasa, which he picked up in the 1970s.
