Marielle Heller is an American writer, director, and actress born in Marin, California on October 1, 1979. She is best known for writing and directing the film The Diary of a Teenage Girl and for directing the film Can You Ever Forgive Me?. After graduating from college she worked as an actor at the Magic Theatre, the American Conservatory Theater, Berkeley Repertory, and the La Jolla Playhouse. She has acted in theatre productions of Continental Divide, Hamlet, King Lear, Much Ado About Nothing, Peninsula and more. She made her debut on television in 2002 in the show Spin City and has since had roles in the shows All-For-Nots and Single Dads. In 2010 she made her debut in film in the movie MacGruber and continued landing roles in the films A Walk Among Tombstones, Paper Anchor, and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. She made her directorial debut in 2015 with the film The Diary of a Teenage Girl. She has since directed the films Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. She has also directed episodes of the television shows Transparent and Casual.
