John Scofield was born on December 26, 1951 in Dayton, Ohio. His music is more of a combination of soul, blues, shake, and jazz. He began his music career when he signed with Enja Records in 1976. Through Enja Records, he released his first album in 1997 and named it John Scofield. He met popular pianist Hal Halper and released his solo album Rough House in 1978.
Scofield created the Blue Matter Band, which also consists of drummer Dennis Chambers, bassist Gary Grainger, and Mitchel Forman, Robert Aries, and Jim Beard on other instruments. They released Blue Matter, Loud Jazz and Pick Hits Live in the 1980’s, which was warmly received by fans and critics. As of today, Scofield’s discography is extensive for singles, collaborations, and sideman roles. Other than making music, he works in the music department at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Education. His awards include a Miles Davis award from 1998, a 2016 Grammy Award, and two 2017 Grammy Awards.
