Born as Joel Daniel Coen on November 29, 1954, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Joel Coen is known for Fargo. He received his first Oscar Award for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen in 1997 for the film. He also received a nomination for Best Director and Best Film Editing for Fargo. In 2017, the film won the Best Picture from 20/20 Awards. He also serves as the executive producer of the TV series Fargo.

He won another Oscar for Best Motion Picture of the Year in 2008 for No Country for Old Men. The movie also won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture.

His earliest projects include the shorts Zeimers in Zambezi (1970), Lumberjacks at Play (1971), and Soundings (1980).
