Donnie Andrew McClurkin, Jr. was born on November 9, 1959 in Copiague, New York. After his brother was killed in a hit-and-run accident in 1967, he found peace and comfort through going to church. He formed various bands while he was a teenager and he was appointed as a minister at fellow gospel leader Marvin Winans’s church in 1989.

He signed with Warner Alliance and released his first album in 1996. This featured his song Stand, which was promoted by the renowned Oprah Winfrey and thus gained McClurkin fame. He has produced three solo albums, each of which has hit the Billboard charts. He released Live in London and More and Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs, which both gained attention worldwide. Due to his international recognition, he incorporates a wide range of languages in his live concerts. So far, he has received three Grammy Awards, two Soul Train Music Awards, and two BET Awards.
