Denis Villeneuve is a French Canadian film director and writer born in Bécancour, Canada on October 3, 1967. He is best known for directing the films Prisoners, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049. He started his career making short films and in 1991 won Radio-Canada’s youth film competition. In 1998 he made his feature film directorial debut with the film August 32nd on Earth. Villeneuve was the writer and director on the films August 32nd on Earth, Maelstrom, Polytechnique, and Incendies. He was the director on the films Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049 and was the writer, director and producer on the film Dune. He has also been involved in several short films, including La Course Destination Monde, REW FFWD, Cosmos, 120 Seconds to Get Elected, Next Floor, Rated R For Nudity, and Étude empirique sur L’influence du son sur la persistance rétinienne. Throughout his career he has been nominated for a number of awards and has won 4 Canadian Screen Awards, a Directors Guild of Canada Award, a SIGNIS Award, 4 Genie Awards, a Hugo Award among others.
