Chuck D

Chuck D is the stage name of the American rapper, producer, and author Carlton Douglas Ridenhour. He was born in Queens, New York on August 1, 1960. Chuck D is best known for being the leader of the rap group Public Enemy. He started writing lyrics in 1977 after the New York blackout of 1977. While in college he co-hosted the hip-hop radio show Super Spectrum Mix Hour and took on the name Chuck D. He was signed to Def Jam Label after the producer Rick Rubin heard his mixtape. In 1986 he helped form the rap group Public Enemy and in 1987 they released their debut album titled Yo! Bum Rush the Show. Together they released 14 studio albums, 2 live albums, 4 compilation albums, and 4 video albums. The group created rap songs that focused on political and social issues. In 1996 Chuck D released his debut studio album titled Autobiography of Mistachuck and followed it up with the albums The Black in Man, If I Can’t Change the People Around Me I Change the People Around Me, and Celebration of Ignorance. He has also made appearances in a number of films and documentaries, including Rhyme & Reason, The Black Candle, The Bet, Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap, An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn and others.
