Azad, born Azad Azadpour on November 24th, 1973 in Sanandaj, Iran is a rapper based in Germany of Kurdish descent. Moving to Germany in 1984 as a refugee, Azad immediately fell in love with hip-hop culture first as a dancer, then graffiti artist, and finally a rapper. Azad began to rap in 1988 with the Cold-n-Locco crew (later called the Asiatic Warriors), which consisted of Combad, A-bomb, and D-Flame. The group mixed German, Kurdish, and English into their rhymes to much success and popularity.

After splitting from the group in 1991 and continued to make underground rap tracks as a solo artist and made his mainstream debut in 2000 with the track “Napalm 12”.  In 2001 he released his debut album, Leben, on the label 3p. Azad continued to release albums as a solo artist and set up his own label, Bozz Music, in 2004. He collaborated with artists like Kool Savas for a team up album called Game Over in 2006, which featured an appearance by Kurdish vocal legend Perwer.

His greatest commercial success came in 2016 with the release of the album Liben 2. The album topped the German charts and peaked at number 1 in February of 2016 after 1 week on the chart.  His follow up album, NXTLVL, similarly peaked at number 3 and became a hit in Australia and Switzerland as well.
