Coming from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Alvvays was formed in 2011. It was found by lead vocalist Molly Raknin, Kerri MacLellan for keyboards, Alec O’Hanley as guitarist, Brian Murphy for bass, and Phil Maclssac as drummer. The five-piece band toured heavily as support acts for Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Peter Bjorn and John.
Their debut album was recorded at Calgary studio in 2013, enlisting Chad VanGaalen to join the record sessions. Their standout performance was at 2014’s SXSW. They also had an internet hype with their demo “Adult Diversion” under Polyvinyl Records.
